Ingredients

For the cube steak
  • 2 lbs cube steak about 4-6 pieces
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
For the gravy
  • 1 large onion sliced
  • 2 cup beef broth
  • 1 packet onion soup mix 1 oz
  • 1 packet brown gravy mix 0.87 oz
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup 10.5 oz
  • 1 tsp garlic powder

Method

  1. Mix flour, salt, and pepper. Coat each cube steak on both sides.
  2. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat and brown the steaks 2 minutes per side. Searing is optional but adds deep flavor.
  3. Place sliced onion in the bottom of the crock pot, then arrange the seared cube steaks on top.
  4. Whisk beef broth, onion soup mix, brown gravy mix, cream of mushroom soup, and garlic powder. Pour over the steaks.
  5. Cover and cook on LOW for 6-8 hours or HIGH for 3-4 hours, until the beef is fork-tender.
  6. Spoon the cube steak and gravy over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.

Notes

For a thicker gravy, stir in a cornstarch slurry (1 tbsp cornstarch + 2 tbsp water) at the end. Nutrition values are estimates.
